HOUSTON, TEXAS (December 7, 2011) Decade, a ten-year survey of Sarah Greene Reeds digital collage work, will open at the Beeville Art Museum on Saturday, January 21, 2012. The Austin-based artist, a proponent of more is more, creates large, colorful, multi-layered collages, featuring a variety of objects including scanned photos, fabric swatches, bottle caps, zippers, food, string and wire.
Tracy Saucier, Director of the Beeville Museum, has been following Reeds work for several years, and says, Weve wanted to show Sarahs work for quite some time and are thrilled to host her ten-year retrospective.
To create each of her pieces, Reed scans the objectsoften things she has found-- and photographs, and then edits the color and composition of each layer on her computer.
Ive always collected things and consider my collages personal landscapes developed from a catalogue of images Ive created over the years, she stated.
With a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, MFA studies in Photography at the University of Houston, and a graduate certificate in American Arts from Sothebys in New York, Reed developed a diverse artistic background that eventually led to her digital work. When I started working digitally, I had a lightening-bolt moment when I realized it all made senseits the ultimate combination of everything Ive worked towards, stated the artist.
Sarah Greene Reed has exhibited her work at national galleries and institutions, including Moody Gallery in Houston, Texas; D Berman Gallery in Austin, Texas; Lewis Art Gallery, Millsaps College, Jackson, Mississippi; and the National Humanities Center, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Reeds work is also included in the permanent collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Morris Museum of Art, Augusta, Georgia; and The Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans, Louisiana. Most recently, Reed has branched out into illustration, teaming up with author Hynden Walch on a childrens book entitled, Ben and Boo: Two Dogs on Mars with Banana Pie.

Sarah Greene Reed is collaborating with writer Hynden Walch on their second book:The Hillside Produce Cooperative Book shows and tells how to set up a free, eating-off-the-grid, neighborhood food collective through a crazy-quilt of stories, interviews, and illustrations by co-op founder and author Hynden Walch and artist Sarah Greene Reed. The Hillside Produce Cooperative is based in Los Angeles, but the principles can be applied to any neighborhood. The how-to element is leavened with stories of the authors follies and triumphs thinking-up, starting, and then running the Hillside Produce Cooperative. The book dives into both the (pine) nuts and bolts of how to implement this system and also examines why one might want to. Alongside the practicalities, it touches on the historical influences, laws, economic theories, current events, spiritual essence, philosophical ideals, and yummy recipes of a free neighborhood food exchange. The Hillside Produce Cooperative Book shows how one person can help change her community by connecting her neighbors through generously given, freely shared, home-grown food.
The first free food exchange of the Hillside Produce Cooperative took place in August of 2008 with eight neighbors in Northeast Los Angeles. It has now grown to over three-hundred and fifty members with six chapters in California and has been featured in the New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, KCRWs Good Food, Dwell Magazine, and Tasting Table. Founder Hynden Walch happily runs operations from her home and tells anyone who will listen how easy it is to eliminate waste, build community, and have lots and lots of lovely local food to eat for FREE.
